Maggie Lamparelli: Buffalo Barkery
What made you start your business and why?
I was born obsessed with animals, dogs especially. My dogs are my FAMILY, my CHILDREN. You know how you feel about your children? That is the same love I have always felt for my dogs. That being said, I have always been conscious of what my dogs eat and even made their food at one point (that was insane). Every holiday and birthday I would make special biscuits and treats for my dogs as well. I researched the ingredients that were in a majority of the biscuits that were out there. After that, I decided that I was going to experiment with my own recipes. I got to talking with Cheryl about this and we starting trading recipes. Our dogs were in heaven!! Then one day we talked about sharing our biscuits with others. Long story short, we came up with a plan and a few years later BOOM! Buffalo Barkery was born and we haven’t looked back!
What community organizations are you involved with?
Currently, we work closely with the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter. This is something that I am super passionate about. We love when volunteers bring adoptable dogs into our shop. They get tons of treats and love and we post them on our social media in hopes of more people seeing them, falling in love and adopting them. We have a collection box at our shop where people can drop donations off for the shelter and we deliver them for them. Our event, Barks at the Brewery, raised almost $3,000 for the Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter and we plan on organizing that event again this year.
Do you have any pets? Names, ages
Do I? YES! I have two dogs, Ruby Woo and Opal Blu. Ruby is a 13 1/2 year old chow mix who has the biggest attitude in the world (read: DIVA Extraordinaire) and I love every second of it! Opal is a 1 1/2 year old staffy that we adopted from the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter. She’s the perfect mix of sweet and naughty.
I feel like I have to tell you a little bit about Olive as well. We lost her about a year ago. She was a 10 1/2 year old black lab mix. She had a rough start to life and was always a bit nervous, but she taught me what it is to be loved unconditionally and taught us resilience. There isn’t a day that goes by that she doesn’t cross my mind. If she only knew how much she is missed.
What are your long-term goals?
My long-term goals are to help as many animals as I possibly can. Have I mentioned that this is something that I’m passionate about? Along with our Barks at the Brewery event that will happen in the fall, I would like to organize at least one other event this year to bring awareness to the needs of the animals at the shelter and to raise money and supplies for them. Another goal is to directly sponsor more animals at the shelter with the hope of finding them their forever homes sooner. I have always had the dream of starting a rescue as well.
What do you do for fun?
I love to explore Buffalo and all the city has to offer! When the weather is warm, my husband Drew and I take the girls to the Outer Harbor, Delaware Park, and to all of the different beautiful neighborhoods to take in the sights.
Drew and I love music and love to go to shows, listen to music and collect vinyl.
We are travel junkies. One of our favorite things to do on trips is to visit local pet stores. Who knew that one day we would have our own? Life advice: Follow your dreams.
I also really enjoy yoga. It helps me clear my mind and Opal loves to join me in my practice!
Band: The Cure, Local Natives
Movie or TV Show: I love Food Network and all shows on Bravo. Don’t judge. Ha!
Place to go unwind: The beach or anywhere outside
Food: Linguini with clam sauce, stuffed artichokes
